Anna Marie (Schoener) Garcia

Anna Marie Schoener Garcia, 67, of Nordheim went to be with God after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. 

She was born to Richard and Hattie Schoener on September 16, 1948 in Taylor.  She was baptized on September 29, 1957 and later confirmed on April 7, 1963 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor by the Rev. E.A. Heye. 

She graduated from Taylor High School in 1967 and accepted a music scholarship at Texas A&I University in Kingsville. She earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1971 and was hired as an assistant band director at Zapata High School. 

There she met Rene Garcia, a colleague, and they were married on October 21, 1972 in Hebbronville. On August 16, 1977, the day that Elvis Presley died, they began a new life in Nordheim. 

She was the band director and all-level music teacher at Nordheim ISD from 1979-1982 and again from 2000-2016. From 1992-1999 she taught fifth grade. 

She had a passion for music and was a founding member of the Nordheim Faculty and Friends Band and the creator of the youth and adults choirs at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Nordheim. She was a member of Blasmusik Texas, an all-state German band and travelled with the group to play concerts in Germany in 1994 and 1999. 

She was also a member of Tau Beta Sigma, Delta Omicron, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, the Association of Texas Small School Bands, Delta Kappa Gamma – Alpha Phi Chapter, the Circle of Hope and the Women of the ELCA. 

She is survived by her husband; sons Rene Garcia, Jr. of Houston and Aaron Garcia of Austin; sisters Joyce Humes of San Antonio and Marcella Schoener of Taylor; brother Herman Schoener of Belleville, IL; sisters-in-law Gloria Garcia and husband Arturo of Eagle Pass and Kiyoko Schoener along with many nephews, nieces, and friends. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers James Schoener and Allen Schoener; sister Virginia Prince and husband Don; sisters-in-law Irene Schoener and Lesvia Ramos and husband Arturo and brother-in-law Leonard Humes.

 A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 5-7pm at the Massey Funeral Home, 779 N. Riedel, Yorktown. There will be a prayer service at 6pm.  The funeral will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 4:30pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 313 Chaparral, Nordheim with the Rev. Sue Irvin officiating. Interment will follow at the Nordheim Cemetery. 

Pallbearers will be Charlie Calhoun, Juan Garza, Paul Garza, Lenny Humes, Rob Schoener and Larry Wolf. 

The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the healthcare providers at Bohman Clinic, Cuero Community Hospital, Citizens Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center and Memorial Hermann Hospital in addition to all family and friends who have accompanied her in these last few months of illness. 

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to the Music Fund of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
