Maurice Shenkir

Maurice Shenkir, 77, of Yorktown, Texas, went home to be with his heavenly Father on October 9, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. Maurice was born on December 5, 1940, in Rogers, Texas, to Henry and Mollie Shenkir. He grew up in Calliham, Texas, graduated from Tilden High School, and attended Uvalde Junior College and A & I Kingsville College. Maurice worked for 31 years for Quintana Petroleum Corporation in Refugio, Texas, before retiring in 2000. He married Peggy Elaine Griffin on November 25, 1966, and they remained married for almost 52 years. Maurice and Elaine raised their family in Victoria, Texas, until they moved to Yorktown, Texas, in 2000, where they were active members of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Maurice loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with his friends and family, and managing their land and cattle. He never met a stranger, and he was always ready with a joke and a smile. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Maurice is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mollie Shenkir, brother Edward Shenkir, sister Darlene Shenkir, and son Trevor Seth Shenkir.

Maurice is survived by his wife Peggy Elaine Shenkir of Yorktown, Texas; son Clayton Maurice Shenkir, daughter-in-law Stefanie Cates, granddaughter Adelaide Shenkir, and step-grandchildren Skylar and Slade Cates of Georgetown, Texas; daughter Jodie Lynette Shenkir Elder, son-in-law Clayton Elder, and grandchildren Payton Seth Elder and Jordan Elizabeth Elder of Dallas, Texas; sisters Dorothy Shenkir of Yorktown, Texas, and Mary (Herman) Smith of Calliham, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church Activity Center Building Fund and Hospice of South Texas.

Visitation 5-7 pm Friday October 12, 2018 with Rosary starting at 7 pm at Massey Funeral Home in Yorktown, Texas. Funeral to celebrate the life of Maurice Shenkir will be 10 am on October 13, 2018, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Yorktown, Texas, with Father Roger Hawes officiating. Reception following at Yorktown Community Hall.

Maurice will be buried at Memory Gardens in Victoria, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Tait, Matt Carlsen, Jason Smith, Donald Baker, Ronnie Baker and Brian Metting.
