Prudence Emily (Gottardy) Froebel

Prudence Emily Gottardy Froebel, 83, of Yorktown passed away March 31, 2019. She was born Aug. 26, 1935 in San Antonio to the late Leonard and Louise Wauters Gottardy. Prudence graduated from South San High School and remained proud to be a Bobcat and a Belgian. Before marriage in 1955 Prudence worked at Kress department store and also South Western Bell. Her next adventure included becoming a mom. As the wife of an Army officer Prudence lived in several states including Pennsylvania, Texas, New Jersey, Kentucky and for 3 years she lived in Germany. As a homemaker she made sure her children always participated in their numerous sports, music and school related activities and also found time to volunteer at officer wife’s sponsored events and Girl Scouts.

Prudence had a gift of sewing and a heart for caring. As her older children were starting their careers and her youngest completing her degree, Prudence went to college and earned her licensed vocational nursing degree. She then worked at the Lytle nursing home and later used her gifts to work with students at Lytle Elementary School as a special education aide and school nurse. She loved being back in Texas so she could be part of family gatherings with her brothers and “the sisterhood” and their families. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren at Sea World, camping at Big Bend during the holidays, taking day trips to Lost Maples and eating at Luby’s. She looked forward to retirement so she could be a grandma, travel to Branson Missouri, or hear Willy and Hootie in concert.

Despite her fierce independence and desire to never be a burden, Prudence experienced a divine challenge to accept and endure the loving care of her family in Yorktown with much help from the Lydia Bryand clan for the remaining 18 years of her wonderful life. In her words “Glad you got to see me!”

Prudence is survived by her children Bette Froebel, Martin (Martha) Froebel and Barbara (Justo) Bryand Jr. She also is survived by her grandchildren Matthew Bryand, Christopher (Leighanne) Schlicke, Megan (Jake) Pedraza, Michael (Jodie) Froebel, great grandchildren Landon Pedraza, Harrison Froebel and brothers and sisters Johnny Gottardy, Margie Grothues, Geraldine (Gene) Kellner, Richard (Barbara) Gottardy, brother in law Daniel Cerna, sister in law Leatrice Gottardy and former spouse Martin (Barbara Campbell) Froebel Sr.

Prudence is preceded in death by her parents, paternal grandparents Fortunato Gottardy and Maria Christofoletti, maternal grandparents John Baptiste Wauters and Prudence Scheire. Also her siblings Lucille (Julius) Calle, Rosalie Cerna, Gerald Gottardy, brother in law John Grothues and sister in law Mary Gottardy.

Prudence’s family would like to acknowledge the caregivers of Harbor Hospice of Victoria. A difficult progression made peacefully because of all of you especially mom’s 3 angels Raquel Canales, Roxanna McAdams and Jayme Huff who visited often with much love, patience and professionalism, Thank You!

Visitation 5-7 pm Wed. April 3, 2019 with Rosary at 7 pm at Massey Funeral Home. Funeral Mass 10 am Thurs. April 4, 2019 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Harbor Hospice of Victoria or donor’s choice.
