Gilbert Marion Gibbs WA5YKK of Yorktown, TX, passed away on Dec 28th, 2025 at the age of 81. Gilbert was born in Corpus Christi, TX January 31,1944 to Frank J. and Elizabeth A Setzer Gibbs, and resided in Port Aransas, TX.
Gilbert graduated from Aransas Pass High School in 1963 before joining the US Air Force as a Radar Technician, earning the rank of Airman 1st Class with the 761st Radar Squadron at the North Bend Air Force Station in Oregon successfully completing his enlistment in 1967 earning an Honorable discharge.
With the call sign of WA5YKK, Gil spoke with and befriended countless amateur radio operators across the world. A lover of all things Radio, Weather and Science, Gilbert found peace in his ‘on air’ time and working on his radio set up.
Gilbert was a volunteer first responder with the Port Aransas Volunteer Fire department and an EMT, devoting his life to aiding others. Through his efforts as a volunteer, Gil helped save countless lives and properties, but he never sought or expected thanks for his volunteer work. That selflessness extended to his personal life, too. Gilbert was an amazing, kind, caring, and generous person, traits that were reflected both at home and out in the field working various jobs throughout his life.
Gil was a Son of the American Revolution and a DeMolay.
Gilbert sacrificed his college education by staying in Port Aransas to help his parents run and maintain their successful family business of 83 years, Gibbs Cottages on N Alister Street. Devastated in 2017 by Hurricane Harvey, Gilbert was able to completely rebuild his family’s business before moving to his Ranch in Yorktown TX.
He is survived by numerous cousins and lifelong friends across the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Ann Gibbs.
Visitation will be held at Massey Funeral Home in Yorktown, TX on Jan 10th 2026 from 3pm-5pm.
